BORN BLIND
Elder Marty Hoogasian
"Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind" John 9:32
Men after graciously blessed with divine light often have wisdom and knowledge that the most educated by worldly standards can never possess. Here we read of a blind man that our Lord made to see trying to "shed some light" on the True Light that lighted his world. He said here is a "marvelous thing". The Pharisees professed that they knew not from whence Jesus was. They described themselves as Moses disciples and accused the one that was formerly blind of being Jesus' disciple. The Pharisees said that they knew that God spake unto Moses. How is it that they knew? They recalled what they were taught. So much of what passes for knowledge comes with no personal experience. They learned it! It is possible for men to recall what they have been taught but it is impossible to generate faith to believe.
The man that was born blind could recount how Jesus made clay on the Sabbath day and put that clay upon his eyes. He recited how he obeyed and washed in the pool and did see. Still after all this gracious work he was still ignorant regarding the Son of God (John 9:35). This poor man reviled not again when he was told that he was altogether born in sins and cast of by the Pharisees. The Pharisees asked the poor one that was formerly blind, Doest thou teach us? Man cannot teach another man about God anymore than a man can make one born blind to see. But Jesus heard that Pharisees cast him out. Our Lord knows what comes our way in this life. Jesus once again found him and revealed Himself. Then the blind man worshipped Him. It still is so today. Our Lord must reveal himself to His children before there will be any true worship. Our Lord said for judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and they which see might be made blind.
Our Lord continues to impart spiritual sight to his elect that are born blind. Likewise today there are still those that insist that they can see who are in fact blind to the things of heaven and immortal glory. They see all that can be perceived and comprehended in this world by worldly wisdom. The fact that there are some that through faith understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear completely alludes them. Our Lord still brings the blind by a way that they knew not. He still leads them in paths that they have not known. He still makes darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and forever. 5/8/2004 Elder Marty Hoogasian
