What is my reward then? Verily: which
means truly, that when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of
Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. What
was his reward then? Was it not seeing these people to whom he had
preached freely, living in the freedom of love where there is no fear.
When I see the people freely bestowing their gifts of love upon such an
unworthy creature as I, then I am made to rejoice- Not that I desire a
gift of them, but I know if they will love me with their carnal things
after I have not charged them, then shall I not indeed know they will
love those who are worthy. Is this then not the fruit that I desired to
see? Not the gift to me, but to see them set free from fear. and
taxation to love perfectly. Is this not Paul's great reward in
preaching the gospel without charge? And he had rather die than have it
be any other way! Do you mind so terribly if I should seek the
same reward? Yea, we who wait at the altar are partakers with the
altar. We minister at the Lord's house, we eat of the sweet offering of
the brethren, we sleep in the most comfortable beds they have to offer,
we rest in their most comfortable chairs, we receive of them sweet
counsel, and courage to press on in the service of our Lord; we start
to go and they give us of their wages, we haul away their fruits and
vegetables they have prepared for their bodies during the cold winter
months. But how often do we do the small things Jesus has commanded us
to do? In the sending out of the Apostles He gave them their
instructions and also when He sent out the other seventy He gave them
the same instructions when He first sent them out, that they should
know He would take care of them. I am persuaded that He tells the
ministers of today the very same; that in going they shall be fed and
clothed if they go with faith in Him. But I am made to wonder how often
we have failed to heed one great command of our Saviour which is given
as a first lesson? "And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say,
peace be unto this house, and if the Son of Peace (Jesus) be there,
your peace shall rest. upon. it: If not, it shall return to You again."
How many times. upon. entry do, we say "Peace be unto this house?" Yes,
Paul knew that the ministers have great power in this liberty to
forbear working, and he also knew they had it under the law, but the
thing I understand he wanted to. examine his way of preaching a
free gospel, was that he did not believe in abusing this power he had
in the gospel. Dear brother, I believe I also have this power in my
possession, but just because I feel to have it, it does not mean that I
am willing to abuse it by being a burden to the people I so dearly
love. No, I had rather die than any should say in truth that I have
abused this wonderful power. I don't want to be misunderstood however,
for even though with my precious old preach brother Paul, I have never
used this power over the people, but many times have taught them
that I would not make the gospel with charge, and that they were free
to love according to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, yet have I found
so many times that my Lord will take care of His servants when they are
sent for, and have the sweet desire to go.
