Train up a Child
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
(Proverbs 22:6)
Godly discipline for our children is under attack by anti-Christian people in our nation. It is just about got to the point that a Godly parent could be charged with child abuse if the authorities discover a whelp or other minor skin abrasion on a child that has been switched by a parent. Although societies change and as a result man's laws reflect that change, God's laws do not change and are still applicable to parents of today. We are instructed to "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying." (Proverbs 19:18) and when switching is necessary we are to "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die". (Proverbs 23:13)
God's word says: The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.(Proverbs 29:15) A look at this nations crime rate and immoral behavior among some young people bears out this proverb and we all feel the shame as a result. Many mothers and fathers have not found rest and enjoyment of their children because of not following God's word. "Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul".(Proverbs 29:17)
Regardless of the trend in America, God's word is still my choice in recommending how to discipline your children and I firmly believe the parents that, in love, follow His word will enjoy the results of their labor by presenting good moral upstanding young adults to the world. A switch or rod is sometimes necessary to fulfill the admonition to the fathers to.…but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)
May the young parents of today in obedience to God, show love and proper discipline to their children that God blessed them with. May they do a better job than the parents did starting in the late 50's and early 60's when a spirit of lax discipline and permissiveness prevailed; as a result a rebellious generation came about.
More parents need to be familiar with what was in the past called 'Peach Tree Tea'. Elder Robert Harlan wrote a very good article about his first experience of learning what it was.
