God's Weeds

In 1828 the notable Webster wrote
A weed is any plant useless to man
But men can be blinded by a brothers mote

The more I examine this weed
In the back yard I found
My soul with Joy is filled, my spirit it freed

In spring they do appear, and Gods glory in them is revealed
They bloom by Gods design and I can but compare
How wretched sinners depend on God who by His touch are healed

Although man many times will say he sees
His actions deny God clothed the grass of the field
And like Solomon in all his glory is not arrayed like these

The Holy Scriptures proclaim the gift of God is eternal life
But like the weed, men claim it useless, unless accepted by them
Thus teaching sinners, salvation is secured by their deeds, oh how rife

A remnant here God has blessed to see, His gift irresistible given
Jesus Christ, the resurrection, and a sinner's only hope
He will a second time appear, his children here to get, their sins forgiven
