Church and Politics

The Church Christ established has existed in many different political environments but has never become politically active as others have.

We are taught in Romans Chapter 13, to be an obedient people to the civil authorities. Those instructions are coupled with God's ordinance that rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. However, from time to time governments become promoters of evil themselves, calling evil good and good evil.

Just as the scriptures clearly teach us to be submissive to the civil authorities, it also clearly teaches us that there are some things that governments do that we are to oppose and not submit too.

The most striking example of this is: Daniel and the Hebrew children. They were disobedient to the king’s decree which required them to worship the King above God. John the Baptist publicly spoke against the King's adulterous marriage giving us an example of publically speaking out on moral issues.  Paul appealed unto Caesar when he was being unjustly prosecuted for his preaching of the Gospel.

In the cases of Daniel and John the Baptist they were laying their lives on the line to oppose the actions of the authorities. While it may get to the point that our lives may be in jeopardy for speaking up, we are thankful for the 200 plus years of freedom we and our forefathers have had to do so.

While I do not support the church being politically active, I do find our public silence on our governments promotion of evil such as, abortion and sodomy, deafening.

There is a proper time and manner for us to speak out individually and as a group.

I believe it is time and pray that I speak in the proper manner!
