The Disciples Prayer
“ And it came to pass, that as he was
praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said
unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, our Father which art in
heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come., Thy will be done, as
in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive
us our sins;for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And
lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”
This prayer recorded in Luke 11:2-4 is often referred to by the world
as the Lord's prayer but it is more accurate to say it is the prayer
the Lord taught his disciples to pray. Thus it is our model prayer! The
Lord prayed often while here on earth. One of the Lord's prayers can be
found in the 17 Chapter of John. It reveals his love for his chosen
people and truly is the Lord's Prayer.
There is no person, living or dead, that we must pray through but
we pray in Christ name and for his sake as the only mediator. “ For
there is one God , and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5) Thus Jesus gave us authority to directly
address out heavenly Father in prayer and due to our weakness in not
knowing what to pray for as we ought, the Spirit makes intercession for
us. (Roman 8:26)
In I Corinthians chapter 11, we are taught that the head of every man
is Christ and the head of the woman is the man. This chapter
teaches us that in prayer we all have direct access through Jesus
Christ to the Father in heaven. The man is to uncover his head (Christ)
when he prays and the woman is to cover her head (the man) when she
prays, therefore prayer is through and for Christ sake. Elder Claude
